Mapping a Domain (General Instructions)

Last Updated: Apr 28, 2013 09:20PM EDT

This guide is intended for those who have already purchased a custom domain name. If you have not yet purchased a custom domain, you will need to do so using a 3rd-party domain provider like GoDaddy, Nettica, Network Solutions, Dotster or any other 3rd-party domain provider who can offer you Full DNS Services with your domain hosting account.

We have instructions for mapping your domain with several specific domain providers at the bottom of this page.

Step 1 - Create a CNAME Record

Log in to your domain registrar's site, and locate the Zone File Settings, DNS Manager or similar area of your control panel. Here you will create a CNAME record that points your domain to us. You'll generally see three fields:

Alias - Should be www
(indicating that the www.yourdomain.com record should point to Squarespace)

Type - Should be CNAME
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using its name)

Points To - Should be www.squarespace6.com
(do not use your Squarespace site address!)

Step 2 - Create an A Record

Within that same Zone File or DNS Management area of your domain provider's interface, create an A Record which will point the version of your domain without the WWW to our IP Address (65.39.205.57).

Alias - Should be @ or the full domain yourdomain.com
(indicating that yourdomain.com should point to Squarespace)

Type - Should be A Record
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using our IP Address)

Points To - Should be 65.39.205.57
(this points your domain to our IP Address)

Note: It is not possible to map a custom domain to a single specific page within your Squarespace site. All mapped domains will point to the site itself and resolve to the domain configured as the Primary.

Step 3 - Set Up Domain Mapping

Within the Site Manager, click Settings to access your Domains.

Click the Link Existing Domain button to add your domain to your Squarespace site.

Note: DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate across the entire internet.
